Strengthening Families, Protecting Children: Voices on Prevention from ASCI Leaders

April marks Child Abuse Prevention Month. This is a time dedicated to raising awareness, strengthening families, and ensuring that every child grows up in a safe, nurturing environment. At A Second Chance, Inc. (ASCI), this mission is at the heart of everything we do. In recognition of this important month, ASCI spoke with Tiffany Byrd, Chief Program Officer, and Toni Wagner, Senior Managing Director, Child and Family Services, to reflect on the importance of prevention and supporting families.

Child abuse prevention begins with support, education, and community. We recognize that families often face complex challenges, and with the right resources and encouragement, they can overcome obstacles and thrive. Our work is grounded in the belief that every family deserves a second chance and every child deserves a bright future.

Child abuse prevention starts with strong families. When we invest in parents with support, education, and compassion, we create safer, healthier futures for children.

At the heart of prevention is the understanding that when families are strengthened, children are better able to grow in safe, stable, and nurturing environments. Supporting caregivers with consistent guidance, resources, and compassion helps build the foundation for long-term family well-being and resilience.

Protecting children means empowering families. When caregivers feel supported, children feel safe.

Throughout this month and beyond, A Second Chance, Inc. continues to provide critical services designed to keep families together and children safe. Our programs focus on prevention through early intervention, helping parents build essential skills, access vital resources, and develop strong, healthy relationships with their children.

Prevention is about meeting families where they are and walking alongside them with the tools and resources they need to thrive.

From parenting education and in-home support to connecting families with housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities, we take a holistic approach to strengthening family stability.

We also understand the importance of community in preventing child abuse. By partnering with local organizations, schools, and service providers, we create a network of care that surrounds families with support. Together, we can reduce isolation, increase awareness, and ensure that no family feels alone in their journey.

When we come together to support, uplift, and believe in families, we create lasting change for children.

Child Abuse Prevention Month is also a time to celebrate resilience. Every day, we witness families making positive changes—through parents learning new ways to communicate, children feeling safer and more secure, and communities coming together to uplift one another. These stories remind us that prevention is not just possible, but it is happening.

Child Abuse Prevention Month reminds us that small acts of support can lead to life-changing outcomes for families.

You can be part of this movement. Whether it’s by spreading awareness or supporting local families, every action makes a difference. When we invest in families, we invest in the future.

We believe prevention is not a moment. It’s a commitment to supporting families every single day.
