Honoring International Day of Women and Girls in Science
At A Second Chance, Inc., we believe kinship is a shared responsibility, a collective promise, and a powerful source of strength. Kin is you. Kin is me. Kin is we. This truth guides our work every day as we uplift children, families, and caregivers through connection, support, and opportunity.
On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we proudly celebrate the brilliance, curiosity, and resilience of women and girls who are shaping the future through science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Their journeys are a reminder that when young people are surrounded by encouragement, by kin, they can imagine boldly and achieve without limits.
For many women and girls, especially those growing up in kinship families, the path into STEM is not always clearly paved. Access to resources, exposure to role models, and consistent encouragement can make all the difference. Kinship care often steps in during moments of transition or uncertainty, providing stability and love when it matters most. That same foundation can also be the launching point for dreams of becoming scientists, researchers, engineers, healthcare professionals, and innovators.

At A Second Chance, Inc., we see kinship as a catalyst. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and extended family members are not only caregivers. They are cheerleaders, teachers, and vision-holders. When a caregiver helps with homework, asks curious questions, or celebrates a science fair project, they are actively shaping a child’s belief in what’s possible. That belief can carry a child into classrooms, laboratories, and leadership spaces where their voice and ideas are needed.
Honoring women and girls in science also means recognizing the importance of representation. When girls see women, especially women who look like them, leading research, solving complex problems, and driving innovation, they begin to see themselves in those roles too. Kinship communities play a vital role in reinforcing that vision, reminding girls that their brilliance belongs in every space.
Today, we celebrate the women and girls who are pushing boundaries, asking bold questions, and changing the world through science. We also celebrate the kin who stand beside them, offering support, stability, and unwavering belief.
When kinship and opportunity meet, futures are transformed. When we uplift women and girls, we strengthen families and communities.
Because kin is you. Kin is me. Kin is we.
