Growing Self-Esteem Through Kinship

February is International Boost Self-Esteem Month, a time to honor the value, confidence, and inner strength of every child. At ASCI, we know that self-esteem grows through connection, care, and the relationships that make children feel seen, supported, and celebrated.

Our guiding theme Kin Is You. Kin Is Me. Kin Is We, reflects the heart of our work in building self-esteem. Kin is the mentor who reminds a child of their value when the world feels uncertain. Kin is the caregiver who listens, encourages, and celebrates every small triumph, helping a child see their own strengths. Kin is the child who, through consistent love and guidance, begins to believe in themselves, understanding that they are capable, resilient, and deserving of every opportunity. Together, these connections form a circle of support that nurtures confidence, fosters courage, and empowers children and youth in care to embrace who they are and who they can become.

Self-esteem is about knowing you are valued, your voice matters, and your story is important. For youth in care, having people who show up consistently, who listen without judgment, and who believe in them, can make all the difference. Every hug, every word of encouragement, every shared laugh becomes a brick in the foundation of self-confidence.

This month, ASCI encourages families, mentors, and community members to reflect on the power of kinship in nurturing self-esteem. Spend time celebrating strengths, recognizing growth, and offering reassurance. Remind children that their past does not define them, achievements are worth celebrating, and above all, they are loved exactly as they are.

Because at ASCI, kin is more than family. It’s the heartbeat of confidence, the foundation of resilience, and the unwavering support that allows every child to shine.

Always remember: Kin Is You. Kin Is Me. Kin Is We.
