Embracing Resilience: Julie and Mariah’s Journey Through Foster Care and Adoption, Part 1

Every month, A Second Chance, Inc. (ASCI) aims to amplify the voices of its families, advocating for their needs and fostering an environment where they can thrive. This month, we had the profound honor of speaking with Julie and Mariah Upvall about their journey to adoption.

Navigating the intricate pathways of kinship care and adoption is a journey filled with twists, turns, and unexpected blessings. Julie’s narrative, intertwined with Mariah’s poignant reflections, offers a profound insight into the complexities and triumphs of their kinship journey through A Second Chance, Inc.

Julie’s odyssey commenced with a serendipitous encounter with Angel, a little girl in kinship care. Although Angel’s path diverged, it laid the foundation for Julie’s immersion into the world of foster care and kinship. She embarked on the noble endeavor of providing respite care, offering solace and support to children in need. Amidst the ebb and flow of fostering, fate intervened, presenting Julie with Mariah, a 10-month-old bundle of joy.

The bond that blossomed between Julie and Mariah transcended the conventional boundaries of caregiver and child. It burgeoned into an unbreakable connection rooted in love, nurturance, and unwavering devotion. Despite the tumultuous legal proceedings and familial complexities, Julie’s steadfast commitment to Mariah never wavered. She embraced the challenges with grace and resilience, forging a path illuminated by hope and compassion.

Mariah’s narrative unfurls as a testament to resilience, fortitude, and the transformative power of love. Her journey from foster care to adoption epitomizes the indomitable spirit of perseverance and the relentless pursuit of one’s dreams. In the crucible of adversity, Mariah discovered the essence of her identity and the boundless potential nestled within her heart.

Seek someone out that has done this and find a mentor. There are so many things that you are going to need to know. If your child needs therapy, don’t get in the middle of that. Make sure they have the opportunity if they want to, to meet their biological parents.

Julie told ASCI.

Julie’s sage advice resonates as a guiding beacon for parents navigating the labyrinthine terrain of kinship care and adoption. She emphasizes the importance of seeking mentorship, fostering open communication, and embracing the inherent imperfections of parenthood.

Julie’s wisdom underscores the significance of preserving familial connections, navigating legal intricacies, and prioritizing the well-being of the child above all else.

“Never keep them away because you never want to be the cause of that. Tell them the truth when they’re ready to hear it. They can make their own judgements. Never get in between that,” she continued.

Mariah imparts invaluable insights gleaned from her own experience. She exhorts children traversing similar paths to safeguard their time, cherish familial bonds, and confront challenges with resilience and determination.

Don’t let anybody steal your time. If you go to make that connection and they don’t want it in return, don’t waste your time. It’s not going to be perfect. It’s not going to be sunshine and rainbows. It’s not going to be perfect because no matter what, adopted or not, this is your parent, this is your life. It’s going to be a work in progress. Savor the time you have.
