Celebrating Voices and Connections

Every year, World Read Aloud Day reminds us of the power of stories and the voices that bring them to life. At ASCI, we know that every child, caregiver, and family member has a story worth sharing. This year, we’re celebrating not just reading aloud, but the voices that strengthen families, honor kinship, and build lifelong connections.

Reading Aloud: More Than Words

Reading aloud is more than just a literacy activity. It’s a bridge. It connects hearts, sparks imagination, and nurtures understanding. For children in care, these moments of shared stories create stability, foster trust, and reinforce that someone is listening and cares.

Through Stories: Kin Is You. Kin Is Me. Kin Is We.

This year, our World Read Aloud Day celebration is guided by our theme: Kin Is You. Kin Is Me. Kin Is We. When we read aloud together, kinship comes alive through stories:

How Families Can Join the Celebration

Families in care can participate in this special day in simple yet meaningful ways:

  • Read together aloud: Pick a favorite book or a new story, and read it together. Pause to discuss the characters, their decisions, and their emotions.
  • Share stories from life: We encourage children and caregivers to tell stories from their own lives, family traditions, memorable moments, or dreams for the future.
  • Create a kinship storybook: Families can write or draw stories that celebrate their connections. Each page is a reminder of the care, love, and guidance that kinship provides.
Why This Matters

Every story read aloud is a moment of connection. For children in care, these moments affirm that their voices matter, their experiences are seen, and their family, whether biological, foster, or kin, is a source of strength. By blending the joy of reading with the power of kinship, ASCI hopes to inspire families to celebrate their unique bonds every day.

This World Read Aloud Day, let’s raise our voices together for stories, for children, for families. Because every child deserves to be heard. Every family deserves to be recognized. And together, kin is you, kin is me, kin is we, one story at a time.
