Building Connection Through Care: ASCI’s POC Department Retreat
At A Second Chance, Inc. (ASCI), the Point of Contact (POC) Department recently stepped away from the pace of daily responsibilities to spend intentional time together. The retreat created space for staff to slow down, reconnect, and engage with one another in a way that felt grounded, natural, and real.
It wasn’t about formal agendas or structure, but about people who serve. During this time, the team was intentional about building trust, strengthening relationships, and remembering that the work begins with connection.
Laughter, Teamwork, and Shared Moments
The day moved easily between laughter and collaboration. At Playground DropOut, a game show-style experience, the team brought out encouragement, light competition, and a lot of cheering each other on. The energy was high, with teams thinking together, laughing together, and leaning into the moment.
Rozlyn Deicas reflected on the experience with appreciation for the energy and leadership that shaped the day, “It was awesome. Danielle Hall really did a great job facilitating everything. It was fun, engaging, and honestly really appreciated.”
What stood out wasn’t just the activities themselves, but the way people showed up for each other through supporting, laughing, and genuinely enjoying time together outside of the usual workflow.
Centering the Work Behind the Work
Between the activities and conversations, there were also quieter reminders of why the work matters. Staff reflected on the families they support daily and what it means to show up with patience, consistency, and care even when things are complex or fast-moving.
For newer team members, the retreat also offered a meaningful introduction to the program and the people behind it. Starr Irvin shared, “As a new employee, it was informative. The retreat was a good segue into the program and staff.”
That sense of connection became a steady thread throughout the day.
Carrying the Energy Forward
As the retreat came to a close, what remained wasn’t just memories of activities, but a shared sense of ease and connection that lingered in conversations and interactions.
The POC Department left with a renewed reminder that strong systems are built by strong relationships. And when staff feel connected, supported, and seen, that foundation naturally carries into the way they serve families with care, intention, and heart.
