Boosting Your Self-Esteem: A Reminder That You Matter

Self-esteem isn’t something you either “have” or “don’t have.” It’s something you build. Slowly. On purpose. Some days it feels strong, other days it feels shaky, and that’s normal.

For youth in care, it can feel like you’re carrying extra pressure nobody talks about. Adjusting to change, navigating new experiences, or trying to figure out where you belong can affect the way you see yourself. For young people in care, confidence can sometimes take a hit when life feels uncertain. Here’s your reminder: you are not behind, you are not less than, and you are not alone in this.

At A Second Chance, Inc., we believe confidence grows in safe spaces, supportive relationships, and everyday moments where you start choosing yourself a little more. Whether that support comes from kinship caregivers, foster parents, mentors, caseworkers, family members, or trusted adults in your corner, having people who remind you of your value matters.

Stop Scrolling, Start Noticing

Social media can mess with your head if you let it. Everyone looks like they’re thriving 24/7, but that’s not real life.

Try this: instead of comparing, start noticing you.
What are you good at? What makes you laugh? What do people come to you for?

Maybe you’re the friend who always listens. Maybe you’re creative, resilient, funny, determined, or caring. Those qualities matter more than you think.

Your life is not supposed to look like theirs.

Talk to Yourself Better

If your self-talk were a person, would you want to be around them? Sometimes the way we talk to ourselves is way harsher than anything anyone else would say.

Try swapping:

“I always mess up” to “I’m learning as I go”

“I’m not good enough” to “I’m growing every day”

“Nobody cares” to “I deserve people who show up for me”

It might feel small, but your words shape your mindset. The more kindness you give yourself, the easier it becomes to believe in your own strength.

Small Wins = Big Progress

Self-esteem doesn’t only come from huge accomplishments. It comes from everyday wins like:

Getting through a tough day, asking for help, showing up even when you didn’t feel like it, or trying again after something didn’t work. Those things matter more than you think.

For youth in care, even learning to trust people again, opening up, or allowing yourself to feel supported can be huge progress too.

Do More of What Feels Like You

Confidence grows when you reconnect with what makes you feel alive. Music, art, sports, writing, fashion, gaming, helping others, whatever it is, lean into it.

The more you show up as yourself, the stronger your confidence becomes. Your story may be different, but different does not mean less valuable.

Protect Your Energy

Not everything deserves access to you. Not every opinion is the truth. Not every friendship is healthy.

It’s okay to take breaks from social media, step away from negativity, set boundaries, and choose peace over pressure. Protecting your peace is part of loving yourself.

Remember that healthy support systems matter. The people around you should help you feel safe, respected, encouraged, and seen.

You’re Still Becoming

You don’t have to have it all figured out right now. You’re still growing, still learning, still becoming who you’re meant to be.

And even on the days you don’t feel confident, your worth doesn’t change.

You matter. Right now. As you are.
