Connection and Community for Youth in Care
This International Friendship Month, we celebrate the power of friendship, especially for youth in care who may have experienced numerous transitions.
For young people in care, forming and maintaining friendships can be both challenging and transformative. Friends provide stability, understanding, and a sense of belonging. These are critical ingredients for their emotional well-being. A friend can be someone who listens without judgment, encourages dreams, or simply shares a smile on a tough day.

Caregivers, mentors, and community programs play a vital role in nurturing these connections for youth in care. By creating safe spaces to meet peers, encouraging participation in clubs or activities, and modeling healthy relationships, adults can help young people build lasting bonds. These friendships teach empathy, resilience, and communication skills that will carry them into adulthood.
International Friendship Month reminds us that friendship is a shared responsibility. It’s about showing up, listening, and creating spaces where youth feel seen and valued. When youth in care know they have friends who care about them, they gain confidence, emotional strength, and the courage to pursue their dreams.
At A Second Chance, Inc., we celebrate every connection that uplifts, inspires, and empowers. This month, we encourage caregivers, mentors, and peers to help youth in care form meaningful friendships. Because friendship is a lifeline, a classroom, and a launchpad for brighter futures.
