Community Changemaker: Casa San Jose

A Second Chance, Inc. is honored to feature Casa San Jose in our Community Change Maker spotlight series. Under the leadership of Executive Director Monica Ruiz, Casa San Jose continues to strengthen and uplift the Latino community throughout Western Pennsylvania.

Monica Ruiz, Executive Director at Casa San Jose, leads a nonprofit that provides essential services to the Latino community in Western Pennsylvania. Since its founding, the organization has grown from a single staff member with two programs to a team of 35 serving approximately 6,000 clients annually.

The amount of people that we’re serving has changed, and the different types of services have changed throughout the year so that we can better meet the needs of the community.

One of the organization’s most exciting milestones is the construction of its own community center on Broadway Avenue in the Beechview area. Monica shared, “We’re almost at the tail end of fundraising for it, we broke ground already, and we should be able to move in September of next year.” Beyond expanding its physical space, Casa San Jose is proud to provide services that are not offered elsewhere, meeting unique needs within the neighborhood and region.

At the heart of Casa San Jose’s work are the values of dignity and respect. Though the organization is not religious, its foundation draws on faith-based principles, guiding daily operations. Monica noted, “Those values help us navigate things every day.”

Casa San Jose’s social services and legal clinics have made a tangible difference in families’ lives.

We are genuine, dependable, reliable, and people know that. We have a really good reputation in the neighborhood.

Beyond providing services, Casa San Jose creates spaces for celebration and pride. Monica explained, “We make sure they never forget where they came from,” referring to the organization’s youth programming, which helps young people honor their heritage while navigating life in the U.S. The organization also hosts events like community Christmas parties and the Three Kings celebration, encouraging joy and connection among families.

When asked what it means to be a community change maker, Monica reflected on Casa San Jose’s bold approach. She said, “We started off as a really small nonprofit, and there are other nonprofits similar to our size, but they don’t get involved in things that matter to the community. We stick our noses in things that people wouldn’t expect, but things that are important to our families: like housing, transportation, clean water, and access to good food are important to us.”

Monica Ruiz and the team at Casa San Jose are redefining what it means to serve and uplift the Latino community in Western Pennsylvania. From expanding programs to creating a space where families feel seen and celebrated, their work goes beyond services—it builds connection, pride, and hope. As Monica reflects, “We’re really working hard at changing the narrative of negative ideals that people might have about immigrants, and they’re not true.”

Through dedication, compassion, and a clear vision, Casa San Jose continues to make a lasting impact, proving that meaningful change begins with understanding, respect, and unwavering commitment to the people you serve.
